RESEARCH

The Effectiveness of Animation vs. Slide show Presentations in Teaching Undergraduate College Students about Macrophage Phenotypes at Wound Sites

Summary

As technology continues to develop, so do the tools our education system implements to teach information. In recent years, animation has become an increasingly popular resource in schools for conveying complicated biological ideas that are better presented in dynamic forms. Slide show presentations, however, remain the chief form of media used to teach undergraduate students. This research compares the ability of an animation with that of a slide show presentation to teach the same complex scientific material to undergraduate students majoring in the biological sciences. The content for this study was created in conjunction with Dr. Timothy Koh of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago and his research on macrophage phenotypes in wound repair. Comparing the efficacy of different types of educational media is an important step to help improve undergraduate students’ learning and comprehension of complex scientific topics.
